CONCERTS
In a program featuring three former Pulitzer Prize winners spanning three musical generations, DC Contemporary Music Forum teams up with Baltimore-based new music ensemble SONAR, composers Aaron Helgeson and Roger Reynolds, and the University of California Washington Center to present an all-evening investigation of currents in contemporary American composition. The event begins with a rare performance by Reynolds of The Image Machine, his recent solo electronic work based on the choreography of Bill T Jones. Reynolds then joins Helgeson and members of SONAR in a brief talk on the evening's music and trends in American composition. Following the talk, SONAR will present a program of virtuosic yet intimate chamber music from the last 40 years. Their program includes George Crumb's electric wartime quartet Black Angels, recent centenarian Elliott Carter's woodwind duo Esprit Rude/Esprit Doux, and the DC premieres of Helgeson's ethereal Five pieces for string quartet and A place toward other places for solo clarinet, and commissions by SONAR's two recent [RADARlab] winners Lonnie Hevia and Ethan Braun, offering a portrait of what it means to be an American composer today.
